National Infrastructure Commission finds Britain 54th in world for 4G, confirming BIG concerns about mobile coverage

A new report by the National Infrastructure Commission has found that Britain is 54th in the world for 4G, behind Romania and Albania, Panama and Peru. This finding confirms the doubts raised by the British Infrastructure Group of MPs (BIG) about the adequacy of Britain’s mobile infrastructure, as outlined in ‘Mobile coverage: A good call for Britain?’.

Grant Shapps MP, Chair of BIG, said, ‘This infrastructure report confirms what the British Infrastructure Group of MPs (BIG) has been saying for a long time. Over the years ministers have been too easily taken in by glib promises from the telecoms providers and ineffective and weak response of the regulator Ofcom.

‘Britain cannot afford a repeat of that outcome with the 5G network and today we call on the Prime Minister to personally ensure that the infrastructure report recommendations are enacted in detail. In particular it’s essential that a Cabinet minister is given the exclusive responsibility to deliver on the promise of 5G and drive progress throughout the UK.’
